Funding and independence

Support sustains the work while preserving independent judgment.

Support for the work

Figure Eleven Foundation’s work is supported through self-funding, allocations from its endowment and selectively accepted private grants and donor support.

Financial support and professional contributions do not confer control over findings or purchase a predetermined outcome.

Independence in practice

Prospective private donors and grantmakers apply to fund the work. Support is accepted selectively following review and agreement. We do not accept client funding for investigations or funding from governments or governmental organizations. We do not receive advertising revenue or referral commissions.

Funding decisions preserve our discretion over what we examine, how we evaluate the evidence and what conclusions the work supports. Conditions requiring a predetermined conclusion, suppression of relevant evidence or preferential treatment are not accepted.

Careful selection of support

Private grants and donor support are considered selectively. The review considers the source of funds, relevant affiliations, proposed conditions and potential conflicts with current or prospective work. Support may be declined where it would compromise the independence or integrity of the work. Submitting a funding application does not make or commit a donation.

Professional participation

Paid employment, contracted work, volunteer participation and pro bono contributions are considered according to the person, the work and the appropriate terms of engagement. Qualifications, motivations, professional development and alignment with our goals inform those decisions.

Fees and direct expenses

We do not charge professional-service fees to fund our investigations. Where appropriate, reimbursement of actual third-party expenses, such as records-production or filing costs, may be arranged in advance. These charges carry no markup and do not purchase influence, access to findings or a particular outcome.
